What inspired you to pursue a career in fashion, beauty and lifestyle?
Growing up, I wasn’t quite sure what career path I wanted to take, if I’m being completely honest. I didn’t know that a career in fashion was even feasible. It seemed so out of reach. It took a little bit of trial and error before figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. Looking back, I was always infatuated with magazines – at the time, they were the only thing I was interested in reading (I’ve grown to love reading now, of course). I was also obsessed with The Hills, where I got a tiny look inside at what it might be like to work for a magazine.
After graduating from High School, I felt rushed to choose a career path, as many of us do. I ended up choosing Social Work but quickly realized that it wasn’t for me. After completing my first year, I withdrew from the program and really focused on finding a career that would make me feel fulfilled and excited. As lame as it sounds, I was actually scrolling through Instagram one day, and I came across someone’s page who was in school for fashion in Toronto. It clicked for me at that moment. That the things I was always interested in from afar, could actually be attainable. Soon after, I enrolled and graduated from a Fashion Management program; I volunteered, worked, and got as much experience in the industry as I possibly could, and decided that this is where I belong.
How do you stay updated on the latest trends in the industry?
Staying up to date on industry trends is a crucial part of my job. Thankfully, it’s also something I really enjoy! I read various media publications daily, follow a ton of fashion and beauty accounts on social media, and, of course, my PR friends are always helping keep me up to date with the latest launches and trending news.
What friendly advice would you offer to budding fashion or beauty writers?
As simple as it is, my best advice is to get as much experience as possible and really put yourself out there. Chances aren’t given to those who don’t ask for them, so never be embarrassed to pitch yourself.
What is your tip for PR professionals to get their pitches to stand out?
The pitches that intrigue me most are the ones that feel personalized as well as straight to the point. Authenticity and honesty are always key. I love to have organic conversations with PR professionals that build mutual trust for an ongoing collaborative relationship.
