InterviewQ&A with Matte PR’s Wendy So

Q&A with Matte PR’s Wendy So

Fresh out of Ryerson University, Wendy is a creative industries graduate beginning her first agency position at Matte PR. She is an aspiring PR gal and loves to dip her toes into anything related to beauty, fashion and food.

What drew you to the field of public relations?

I first learned about it in my fashion classes during university. I was drawn to the idea behind client relations and working with the press. Having volunteered at a fair share of events, PR stood out to me as an interesting career path as I saw how it made a big impact on things like attendance, media coverage and brand image. During my 4th year in my program, I realized and knew that I wanted to work in social media, digital marketing, copywriting and event coordination. Naturally, I thought that PR would be a great fit for all of those things.

Why did you choose Matte PR?

Right out of university, I was on my job hunt and really wanted to get into PR. I researched endlessly online for different PR firms in Toronto and eventually landed on Matte PR. The job posting intrigued me and I really liked the open concept and collaborative work environment that they believed in. After having gone through years of sitting in lectures, I wanted to work alongside a mentor that could teach me the ins and outs of PR. During the interview, I realized that Heidi was exactly the type of mentor I wanted as a PR newbie. She was passionate about teaching me things I never touched before and did not let my lack of PR experience affect her decision to hire me. Right after the interview, I knew that this company was the one I wanted to work in the most.

Who inspires you?

Everyone around me inspires me. It can be anyone: my friends, family, coworkers or people on the streets. Anyone who is ambitious, driven and passionate about what they do inspires me to work better on my own.

What are you passionate about?

I am very passionate about anything related to fashion, beauty and food. I am always on the lookout for the latest buzz in each of those categories!

Where is your favourite place in the world?

As of now, I really enjoy Hong Kong as a vacation city. Public transportation is super convenient and the food is absolutely delicious. It’s also a bonus that it’s basically my second home away from home.

What Instagram account are you loving right now?

My feed is overwhelmed with every beauty brand you can think of. I am equally obsessed with all of them.

Describe your perfect meal

Classic Hong Kong style café breakfast! A cold cup of HK milk tea with a bowl of spam and egg macaroni in soup. I can eat this EVERY DAY.

Fill in the blank: If you really knew me, you’d know:

That I have a moderate wind phobia.

BONUS ROUND: THIS OR THAT

Seasons Change: Summer or Winter? Winter all the way. I hate the heat.

Social: Snapchat or Instagram Stories? I use to be Team Snapchat, but Instagram is now my #1. However, Snapchat still makes the better filters.

Me time: Mani/Pedi or Shopping Spree? Shopping Spree. No doubt.
