Q&A with Matte PR’s Ashley Villarroel
This Toronto foodie slash PR gal is excited to be starting her first agency position in the heart of the big city, where she can be close to her two loves: the Blue Jays and TIFF.
What prompted your PR career choice?
I initially went to school to become a news reporter. Since I was enrolled in a Media Studies program that also covered Public Relations, I learned all about it and was immediately drawn to it. I loved the hustle and bustle of media relations and the pressure of crisis communications.
Why did you choose Matte PR?
I was attracted to the boutique size of Matte PR. I find smaller agencies to be very collaborative, and bouncing creative ideas off of each other in an open environment was very appealing to me.
What has been the most surprising thing about the field of PR?
It’d probably be the fact that things can happen so quickly. Sometimes the planning stage is so short-lived!
If you could pick any other city to live in for a year, where would it be?
Boston. I had the opportunity to visit Boston last summer and immediately fell in love. The people are friendly, the seafood is divine and the historic architecture is stunning. I’d live in the heart of the Fenway neighbourhood. I love the fact that it’s a baseball city (I got to see the Blue Jays at Fenway Park!) so I know I’d truly fit in there.
What book changed your life?
I don’t think I’ve read a book that has changed my life but a couple of my favourites are Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan and The Lie by Chad Kultgen. Both made me laugh a lot.
Where can we find you on a Friday night?
If I’m not checking out a new restaurant in the city, I’m cooking up a storm in my kitchen while watching my Jays or Raptors.
What song is your current anthem?
My Shot from the Hamilton: An American Musical soundtrack. I can rap the entire song and it feels great to be able to do that. It’s a song of ambition and makes me feel like I can do anything. I enjoy jamming to it before starting a project to get my mind running.
Describe your perfect meal.
Belgian-style moules frites: steamed mussels basking in a white wine and garlic broth with crispy French fries. I could eat it every day.
BONUS ROUND: THIS OR THAT
War Paint: Lipstick or Mascara? Mascara. I’m obsessed with eye make-up!
Gettin’ Cozy: Silk or Flannel? Tough one – I love wearing flannel shirts but my silk pillow case is blissful. If I have to choose one, it’d have to be silk.
Noms: Appetizer or Dessert? Appetizer. I’m all about that deep-fried pickle life.
