Toronto-based aesthete, Karina Chu, makes her mark in the PR industry with her quick-wit writing and infectious personality.
What drew you to the field of public relations?
When I was younger I knew I wanted to work in media. I like PR specifically because it’s very social and incorporates generating and communicating ideas. It made me realize how much I really enjoy writing.
Why did you choose Matte PR?
I chose Matte PR because I really wanted to work in a boutique agency with a diverse clientele. I think that having experience working with different industries is really valuable in figuring out what makes you happy and in learning what you need to improve on.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration mostly from the people around me: anyone ambitious, confident and level-headed – or through weird Instagram accounts.
Where is your favourite place in the world?
The most beautiful and memorable places I’ve travelled to are Reykjavik, Iceland and Tokyo, Japan. I desperately want to go back to both.
Who is your favourite creative person?
I can’t say that I have a particular favourite. Throughout different phases of my life, I’ve been inspired by various people. What has stayed consistent is that I’m drawn to anyone who deviates from the norm or of whatever is trending. They’re passionate about what they love, know they’re a bit unusual and are unashamed of who they are.
What makes you feel powerful?
Great hair and bold lipstick.
What is your weirdest habit?
Drinking hot coffee through a straw… apparently that’s weird.
What advice would you give your younger-self?
Stop comparing yourself to others! Focus on what truly makes you happy and not the material things.
What is the wildest thing you’ve ever done?
I ate live termites in Belize. They’re full of protein and taste like spearmint!
What animal do you identify with?
I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan and supporter of House Stark, so definitely a Direwolf.
